This project addresses the increasing disconnect in modern society, where only 23% of New Zealanders regularly share meals. It explores how communication design, through an illustrated recipe book, can inspire communal dining and create connection, using the dinner table as a symbol of togetherness. The artefact is an illustrated recipe book paired with a pottery set, tablecloth, and napkins, providing all the essentials for a shared meal. The illustrations focus on creating warmth and connection rather than depicting the meal’s appearance, reinforcing the message that time with loved ones is what truly matters. Key methods include material thinking, quick sketches, imaginative immersion, and collaborative creativity. These techniques inform the design, ensuring that the artefact communicates the importance of connection through shared meals. The project contributes to communication design by responding creatively to social disconnection. It encourages communal dining and strengthens relationships, bringing connection and conversations to the dinner table. Human connection is essential, which we are losing in today’s fast-paced world.
