Rooted in Indonesian cultural aesthetics, this project seamlessly integrates traditional design elements within a defined framework, allowing for creative exploration. The playful typeface—typically found in children’s storybooks—was selected for its warm, inviting character. An irregular page layout, inspired by the organic patterns of the jungle, enhances the immersive experience, while multiple flaps and openings encourage tactile engagement.
Javanese binding and textured bamboo paper further elevate the sensory interaction, reinforcing the book’s connection to Indonesian craftsmanship. A custom bookmark featuring Kancil, the beloved trickster from Javanese folklore, and a bespoke protective box extend the storytelling beyond the pages, creating a fully considered reading experience. Complementing the book are three posters that capture the story’s climax. Designed within a cohesive visual system, these posters feature borders reminiscent of Polaroid snapshots—offering a glimpse into the narrative without revealing too much, preserving the magic of discovery for readers.
From the carefully curated colour palette to the interactive flaps, every design choice was made to transport readers into the heart of the Indonesian jungle. This project embodies a balance between cultural authenticity and contemporary storytelling, showcasing a thoughtful approach to narrative-driven design that is both educational and deeply engaging for young readers.
